ASoA

Aalborg Sense of Art

5 Semester, main project. A proposal for an extension to the facilities of the art gallery Kunsten in Aalborg. Kunsten, as it stands today, is lacking space to store and exhibit it’s ever growing collection of art, in addition to this, it needs a venue for musicians and artists to perform and speak to a large audience. These needs combined with the cramped working conditions the staff has to endure, have all contributed to the need for an extension of the museum. The project ASoA seeks to address the problems with a new independent building, which contains and builds upon the spatial needs of Kunsten. This is done by incorporating two exhibition halls one of which doubles as a concert hall/auditorium, a dark room and a restaurant in the building.

ASoA aims to incorporate a controlled flow through the new building, in order to finely tune the experience the visitor gets when visiting. This along with varied and diverse spatial experiences gives the visitor the ability to explore the art, as well as the qualities the site has to offer. The location of ASoA plays to the strengths of it’s site, which is to the south of the existing building. It is raised from ground level in order to give the visitor a great view over the elements that make up the site; the sculpture garden, amphitheater and sculpture staircase.

Visually the building’s mix of organic and linear forms is designed to fit the location of the building.

The flow through the building will lead to all rooms and therefore give the visitor the experience of the whole museum. All rooms can also be entered from the entry when events are taken place in a specific room.

All exhibitions are at different floor levels, some elevated with half or whole stories in between.

The building is placed partly in to the hillside. This means that when entering in to the Dark exhibition the visitor also enters into the hill side. The restaurant, which also is the last stop when visiting the museum, is situated on a plateau that is pushed out from the hill and in to the sculpture garden of the museum.
